In 2024, Joshua Owen Mills made his debuts at Savonlinna Opera Festival, singing Yonas in Saariahos Adriana Mater and Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, as well as in Finland’s Jyväskylä Opera, where he performed Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’ elisir d’ amore. At Garsington Opera, he has sung Marzio in Mozart’s Mitridate. The previous year, he perfromed Yonas in Saariaho’s Adriana Mater at Norrlandsoperan, and, Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia singing Liverotto at Bayerische Staatsoper and Vitelozzo at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen.
The tenor was a guest at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, Garsington Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Holt Opera, Jyväskylän Ooppera, National Kaohsiung Centre for Arts, Savonnlinna Opera Festival, Scottish Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, as well at Theater Klagenfurt and worked with directors including Ludger Engels, Johannes Erath, Jack Furness, James Hurley, Richard Jones, Florentine Klepper, Christiane Lutz, Hans Neuenfels, Amélie Niermeyer, John Ramster, Roland Schwab, Dan Turdén. In 2022, the tenor made his debut as Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Staatsoper Hannover, after performing this role at Theater Aachen. The same year, he made his debut as Habakuk in Aachen’s first staging of Blech’s Alpenkönig und Menschenfeind. In 2020, the Welsh tenor made a guest appearance as Zimoviy Borisovich Ismailow in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsenks at Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He covered Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress with Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 2021 and Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore in 2019. Between 2018 and 2020, he appeared in several productions at the Bavarian State Opera.
As a concert soloist, Joshua Owen Mills’ repertoire includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (covering under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome) and War Requiem, Gounod, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Rossini. In 2017 he sang Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music at the Royal Albert Hall on the Last Night of the BBC Proms – and was also a guest at festivals including Glyndebourne Festival, Kings Cross Summer Sounds, Münchner Opernfestspiele, Nevill Holt Festival, North American Festival of Wales, North Wales International Music Festival, Oxford International Song Festival, Rydale Festival.
In concert, Joshua Owen Mills has been accompanied by such ensembles as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra, Kärntner Symphoniker, LSO St Luke’s, Münchner Symphoniker, Royal Northern Sinfonia – he sang under the musical direction of conductors such as Paolo Arrivabeni, Andrea Battistoni, Daniele Callegari, André Callegaro, Karel Mark Chichon, Asher Fisch, Antonio Fogliani, Patrick Hahn, Friedrich Haider, Lothar Koenigs, Patrick Lange, Oksana Lyniv, Ville Matvejeff, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Kirill Petrenko, Kristiina Poska, Andrea Sanguineti, Clemens Schuldt, Giedrė Šlekytė, Lorenzo Viotti, Christopher Ward, Omer Meir Wellber, Chien Wen-pin, Simone Young, Stephen Zillias.
