In 2024, Rainer Trost performed Ferrando in Mozart‘s Così fan tutte at Paris‘ Théâtre du Châtelet, after singing the role in the production by Dmitri Tcherniakov at Festival d‘ Aix-en-Provence the previous year. In 2021/22, the tenor performed in Berg‘s Lulu at Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and Gustav von Aschenbach in Britten‘s Death in Venice at Vienna Volksoper. During the 2022/23 season, he made his role debut as Tichon in Janáček’s Katja Kabanova at Staatsoper Stuttgart. Rainer Trost is a regular at prestigious festivals, including Bayreuther Festspiele, Bregenzer Festspiele, Edinburgh International Festival, Festival d‘ Aix-en-Provence, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Münchner Opernfestspiele and Salzburg Festival.
Rainer Trost’s opera repertoire includes Der Maler and Der Neger in Berg’s Lulu, Gustav von Aschenbach in Britten’s Death in Venice, Pylades in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride and Ulisse in Telemaco, Oronte in Handel’s Alcina and Lurcanio in Ariodante, Dionysos in Henze’s Die Bassariden, Hexe in Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Eumete in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d‘ Ulisse in patria, the title role of Mozart’s Idomeneo, and Tito in La clemenza di Tito, Aron in Schönberg’s Moses und Aron, Alfonso in Schubert’s Alfonso und Estrella, Strauss’ Flamand in Capriccio and Leukippos in Daphne, Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Wagner’s Der Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer, David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as well as Ein junger Seemann in Tristan und Isolde. In operetta, Rainer Trost has performed Prinz Radjami von Lahore in Kálmán‘s Die Bajadere, Camille in Lehár‘s Die lustige Witve and Manfred in Der Graf von Luxemburg, Alfred as well as Eisenstein in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus and Graf Zedlau in Wiener Blut. In world premieres, the tenor has created Calogero in Trojahn’s La grande magia (Semperoper) and Orsino in Wie es euch gefällt (Bayerische Staatsoper).
He performed at companies including Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Metropolitan Opera in New York, Opéra Bastille and Opéra Garnier in Paris, Royal Opera House in London, Teatro Real in Madrid, Theater an der Wien and Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna and has worked with directors including Willy Decker, Dieter Dorn, Tatjana Gürbaca, Andreas Homoki, Richard Jones, Peter Konwitschny, Marco Arturo Marelli, Christoph Marthaler, David McVicar, Benedikt von Peter, David Pountney, Maximilian Schell, Dmitri Tcherniakov, Krzysztof Warlikowski.
The tenor is also very active internationally as a concert singer. He has sung Lieder and sacred music in concert halls including Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Musikhalle Hamburg, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Tonhalle Zürich and Vienna Musikverein. In April 2025, he will sing Evangelist and tenor solo in semi-staged performances of Bach‘s St Matthew Passion at the Hungarian State Opera. He will sing at the closing concert of the 60. Bratislavské hudobné slávnosti in Bratislava. He sung under the baton of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Alain Altinoglu, Michael Boder, Ivor Bolton, Frans Brüggen, William Christie, Alfred Eschwé, Ádám Fischer, Daniele Gatti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Hartmut Haenchen, Friedrich Haider, René Jacobs, Julia Jones, Philippe Jordan, Konrad Junghänel, Lothar Koenigs, Ton Koopman, Nicola Luisotti, Charles Mackerras, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzmacher, Riccardo Minasi, Christopher Moulds, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Kazushi Ohno, Seiji Ozawa, Kirill Petrenko, Trevor Pinnock, Simon Rattle, Helmut Rilling, Jérémie Rhorer, Christophe Rousset, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Franz Welser-Möst, Jaap van Zweden.
